Boston Creme Pie in Boston

The rich, chocolaty cake and creamy dessert known as Boston Creme Pie was first created at a popular Boston hotel, according to historians. It is also Massachusetts' official desert. The pie, which is actually more like a cake, has been a favorite at the Parker House Restaurant/hotel since the Parker House opened in 1855. Its creation is credited to French chef M. Sanzian.

A Boston Creme Pie generally consists of two layers of butter cake, separated by a custard or cream filling. A chocolate glaze, and sometimes confectioner's sugar, is poured over the top and sides, or the sides may be covered with cream filling and toasted almonds, as the cake is prepared at the Parker House.

Over the years, the Parker House has been a favorite among the city's elite and its guests have included Charles Dickens, Isabella Stuart Gardner, and John F. Kennedy. Other dishes it is known for are Boston Scrod (it called the white fish catch of the day "scrod") and Parker House Rolls. The hotel, now called the Omni Parker House, is said to be the oldest continually operating hotel in America. It is located at 60 School Street in Boston, Massachusetts.
