1 DeCordova Museum - Off the beaten path in the quiet town of Lincoln, this modern art museum has not only an impressive range of exhibits, it also features a sculpture park spread out over 35 acres, through which you can leisurely stroll through.

2 MIT List Visual Arts Center - This museum, located in Kendall Square in Cambridge, features several modern exhibits.

3 Harvard University Art Museums - Three renowned museums ? The Fogg Art Museum, Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum ? collectively explore the Italian Renaissance; artwork from central and northern Europe; and Islamic, Indian and Asian creations.

? Admission to all three is $9 for adults. Get there before noon on Saturday, or any day after 4:30 p.m., and admission is free.

4 Orchard House - This historic home in Concord, shown by guided tour only, was once home to the family of writer Louisa May Alcott. Her story Little Women was based in the home.

6 Charles River Museum of Industry - Waltham, about 20 minutes west of Boston, was an early home of industry in the new world, thanks to the power drawn from the Charles River. The Waltham Watch Company is no longer in existence, but it once produced more than 40 million watches. Today, a museum exploring invention resides in the historic 1814 Boston Manufacturing Company textile mill, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as America's first factory.

7 United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum - Tour the USS Salem, located in the former Quincy Fore River Shipyard. The museum also includes a new exhibit that looks at U. S. Navy SEALs, and their history and training.

8 Higgins Armory Museum - In this unusual museum, you can find ancient armor and arms, from not only Western countries, but also from Asia and Africa. Exhibits are spread out over four floors, and events could include a "14th Century Knight Presentation." The museum is located in Worcester.

9 Salem Witch Museum - The popular museum educates visitors on Salem?s witch history and on what witchcraft means through a haunting interactive presentation.

10 Sargent House Museum - You can get a taste of the old New England seaport of Gloucester by visiting this 100-plus-year-old home that was turned into a museum in the early 20th century. Several pieces by painter John Singer Sargent, who traced his roots to Colonial Gloucester, are on display.
